System 7.1

I am trying to get back to playing around with an SE/30 after having been away from Macintosh for more than 15 years. This SE/30 is running System 7.1. I remember essentially nothing about the OS. I bought my first Mac in 1984 and used one at home until I had to limit myself to Macintosh (personal) or Windows (IT work). The two reference manuals I have are for the Mac Plus and its OS. They haven't been helpful with the problem I have.

My SE/30 boots straight to Finder rather than the desktop. During bootup I see what I take to be my desktop with its icons along the bottom of the screen. Additionally, Microsoft Word autoloads. I can't determine how to prevent Word from autoloading nor have I been able to stop loading Finder. The reference manual I have discusses how to autoload applications, however, it refers to a menu item that is absent under the Special menu in Finder! I hope this makes sense to someone!

Thank you all for any assistance you can give. Cheers.

Sam

P.S. Does anyone know where I can obtain documentation for System 7.1?

SE/30-OTHER, Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier, Bootup sequence

Hi Sam,

Probably not so easy to find the 7.1 reference manual today. One other way could be to look for an early The Little Mac Book by Robin Williams. The Macintosh Bible (such as the 5th edition, edited by Darcy DiNucci et al.) may be an alternative for additional information about operating systems, applications and methods.
